A New Friend on Etsy Asked Me This Question..."How do I become successful on promoting myself on Etsy and is it worth it?

A new friend asked me a question: "How do I become successful on listing with Etsy and if it's worth it?"
I love Etsy, I have three shops here. http://www.jewelrybyreshell.etsy.com/, http://www.stoneandbone.etsy.com/ and http://www.creativecaldron.etsy.com/
I'd say my biggest issue is that getting none artist buyers to etys is the key. I feel I'm selling okay, but I would love to do better. I'm fairly new myself, only about 5 months here. But so far I've gotten sales on all of my shops. I've also gotten opportunities through people who've saw my work and loved it, and has asked me to share my pieces in mag. So it is paying off. I have about 10 of my pieces in a NY gallery boutique, from a woman who saw my work on Etsy. So I have done more than just sell. What I suggest though, is to focus on one host at a time. Why? Simple, getting overwhelmed with networking, on so many sites will take up more time than if you spent it making your product. List your site on all the directories you can, and keep up with your etsy is what I feel is the best to do. Trust me, it's easy to get caught up with the social scene. If anything choose the sites that support your niche, more isn't always best. Take good photos, know your work, don't be afraid to experiment with your work, make good descriptions, tags, and renew as much as poss. Is the key. Oh yea follow the community news. but only use what works for you. Remember info is good, only if it fits your niche. If you have any questions convo me any time. One more thing, flickr is a wonderful place to have your work, Indie is another. but other than that, the rest can be time consuming. If you're into groups great, but to me it's just another form of networking that don't always work. It's just my opinion, but I need to reach the buyers, not the artist. Artist buy yes, but we are all in it to make money and sell our work. So just remember handle it like a real business and you'll be fine, follow your intuition on the products that you make. Just because someone else is making it, doesn't mean it's working for them. Do you. Have fun, and fill it with passion. That's always the formula for success. Good luck
Hope it helped Pk

All very good advice. I wish that I had heard it when I first opened my etsy shop. I have found that good customer service, and flickr go a long way.

You rock!! Keep the advice coming for newbies like me!

Aloha Tiff, I know what you mean. But like everything else in this life it's experience that gives us wisdom. I realized that it's through trying all of these networks that I didn't need them. If you like keeping up with my news, check back. LOL PK
